Mental Training for Executives
After years of working with professional and Olympic
athletes, Mental Training, Inc. (MTI) has incorporated the key concepts and
best practices into an Executive Coaching program. To date, the executives and business people who have
hired MTI to coach them were all attracted to the idea of being trained in a
similar manner as an Olympian. They identify well with sports analogies and see our unique
style of coaching as a welcome divergence from the standard "corporate-speak."
The bottom line is, regardless of the competitive arena, we understand how to
improve performance. The specifics of our program are understandably
proprietary, but the basics revolve around the following key stages: Goals - Path -
Skills - Habits - Adversity - Performance. The steps we follow within each
stage are to teach the skill, practice the skill, test the skill, refine the
skill and apply the skill. Every one of our clients has a customized program of
skills designed for them, and we progress carefully so as to minimize any initial performance decrements. As a result, we've been highly effective so far with each of our business executives.
Our Ideal Executive Client
Since the inception of our program in 2008, we've been careful to
take on only those executives who meet our criteria. We know that the majority
of performance problems in sport and business stem from a lack of knowledge,
experience or work ethic. If executives are lacking in any of those 3 areas, they
would be better served resolving them elsewhere before working with MTI.
The clients we take on are "highly knowledgeable and experienced work-horses"
who are either underperforming or have extremely challenging goals.
Here's an Olympic
analogy:
In the fall of 2007, a concerned mother contacted MTI on
behalf of her daughter, who we'll refer to as Jennifer. Jennifer was an elite athlete
who was struggling. After 15 years of training, she was tired and injured and had lost her direction, but
still wanted to reach her dream of becoming an Olympian. After meeting with
her, we determined that while she was past her prime, she met our criteria - knowledgeable, experienced and a
workhorse. We clarified what she was most passionate about, and especially,
what was holding her back. We designed a customized mental training program
that taught her the skills she would need to effectively deal with her current
and future adversity. Not only did Jennifer make the 2008 Olympic team, but she won
a Gold Medal. We don't take much of the credit for her success, but we do know we
played our small part well.
Some Common Benefits of MTI
Executive Coaching
- Identification of the key factors necessary for your best performance;
- Development of the core mental skills necessary for
consistently high performance. Examples include: cognitive restructuring,
attribution retraining, minimizing, visualization and mental practice, reframing, time management, stress management, "alpha brain wave activation" (the type of brain waves associated with creativity and peak performances), etc.;
- The ability to recognize and control your emotions during performance;
- Production of consecutive "perfect" weeks using
a highly effective online charting system;
- Creation of a weekly performance evaluation system, similar to the way
athletes critique game films;
- The ability to be "confidentially accountable."
Coaching is typically done 1-on-1 in our offices, but phone and/or Skype sessions can also be arranged. The cost is $1500/mo and includes four (4) 60min sessions, a custom Mental Training Program (MTP), online performance monitoring, and weekly email support.
